More than a school.

We are a big-hearted learning community where students are not just taught; they are seen, heard, and trusted to take ownership of their learning. We understand that learning is inextricably linked to the social emotional lives of children. We believe that helping children understand and regulate their emotions is foundational to everything else. It’s how we raise resilient, self-aware, and compassionate humans.

Our school is intentionally small so we can truly know each child and grow a tight knit community. This closeness allows us to support individualized learning journeys fueled by curiosity, purpose, and real-world relevance.  It also allows us to support the whole child - mind, body, and spirit. When students walk through the door of SCS, they enter a safe container that allows them to grow into their full, authentic selves.

We challenge the notion that play is only valuable for the youngest learners. This traditional view of play and learning is a false dichotomy - we believe that relegating play to the sidelines in schools is a mistake. Learning is deepened by experiences that are playful — that are joyful, meaningful, actively engaging, iterative, and socially interactive.

Here, learning is active, reflective, and alive. Our students are thinkers, builders, artists, and explorers. They’re doing real work that feels meaningful, developing not only strong academic skills but also confidence, insight, and a sense of responsibility for themselves and their communities. Students dive deep into questions that matter to them. They make things, solve problems, and pursue knowledge not because they have to, but because they want to understand.

We believe

  • Children deserve agency. Our students co-create their learning and follow what sparks their curiosity and purpose.

  • Teaching emotional regulation is transformative. It’s crime prevention. It’s addiction prevention. It’s suicide prevention. It’s generational healing. It’s how we build a more compassionate world.

  • Small class sizes are essential. They allow for deep learning, real relationships, and every child to be truly seen and supported.

  • The deepest learning comes from interdisciplinary work that mirrors the real world. Students develop not only academic skills but also a sense of purpose, agency, and connection.

  • Brilliance and learning differences can coexist. We honor out-of-the-box thinking, special interests, and unique abilities. Our students grow at a pace that reflects their individual strengths and needs.

  • Progressive education isn’t standardized. It’s reflective, creative, collaborative, and alive.

  • Equity must be active. Schools must be antiracist, inclusive, and justice-driven—in practice, not just in principle.

  • There is more to learning that what can be scored on a test. We are raising bold, grounded, emotionally intelligent young people who are ready to think critically, feel deeply, and shape a better future. We value diverse ways of thinking and learning, and we believe that meaningful education honors the whole child, not just what can be scored on a test.
